It was the first tunnel kilns in the country to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for more efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s in order to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products from other manufacturers to complement its own lines of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm's market share.

In the 1990s Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to supply chain management and applied the same methodology in its sales strategy. This led to a higher degree of customer satisfaction.

Discography

You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock band. The group started out as a quartet, and they recorded two albums - 1979's self titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest hit was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but not without its own set of issues. Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to meet the deadline. Luckily for Toto they did with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is due to their prior experience, as the band members had been session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their sonic trademark has become the standard of 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.

The album begins hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also contains jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and sounds completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career. The band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The band was able to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than on previous efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed a few months later, and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it.
