About Toto

Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word which means "all encompassing," the group was determined to explore all styles of music.

The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hit songs, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and tour makes them a household name throughout the globe.

After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It's a change from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a major tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
