Origins

The company was founded in 1917 and its early years were a mirror of Japan's economic growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company made products to meet the demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To do this, it used the country's first tunnel kiln to produce ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, allowing for greater efficiency and consistency.

In the late 1980s, the company began to expand outwards to profit from sales and new markets. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other products of other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and increased the company's market share in the world.

By the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development of water-related household appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve its customers and boost profits. The company embraced a just-in time method of managing supply chains and applied the same methodology for its sales process. This resulted in a higher level of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. Its latest toilet has a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. The company also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets Toto produces bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more energy efficient than conventional models.

The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It has exhibitions on the most iconic products of Toto, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made of ceramics), the history of plumbing, and products such as bath units. In another gallery, visitors will find Toto products sold all over. The museum also has a bathroom that includes a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.

Before the formation of Toto members of the group performed sessions for a variety of musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort that had an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group went on a long-distance tour in support of the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group. This lineup, minus Howe who was busy with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
