Before Toto was formed The members of the band did sessions for other musicians. The group's collaboration led to formation of Toto in the year 1976.

Toto's third album, Turn Back, marked a change from the more progressive sound of their previous albums and was criticized for its absence of hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen left The band held auditions to find a replacement frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the band recorded the 1986 album Fahrenheit.

In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by scouring through demos and tapes from the past to release a special album called Toto XX. The album was well-loved by fans and Toto embarked on a tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.

During the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun the drummer Leland Sklar left the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In the year 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.
