Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Bentley's custom coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed an exclusive key case to mark the centennial of the company. It is made of Dark Stained Burr Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a fluttering 'B' paperweight, a set of keys and a brochure featuring never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre imagery.

This is the ideal way to greet a new owner of a vehicle.

Aesthetics

As a company that is primarily focused on design, Bentley takes its aesthetics seriously. It is evident in the precise position of its quilting, the selection of leather from by-products of cattle production, the wood that comes from sustainably managed forests and the ingenious patterns that are etched on its levers. As you approach a car like the Continental GT W12, its beautiful sculptural design is highlighted by carefully curated lighting.

The Continental GT is Bentley's most sophisticated open-top vehicle. The rear tonneau on the Continental GT, for instance included the biggest piece of dark-stained Burr Walnut veneer that was book-matched. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

It is this unique design, quality and attention to detail that have established Bentley as the world's most sought-after car brand. The company continues to push the limits with the latest technology and craftsmanship, including the introduction of a digital instrument cluster, an electric tilt-opening rear glass sunroof and a crafted docking station for Apple iPads and electrochromic 'smart' glass that can be switched between opaque and transparent by the button.

A century after its creation, Bentley - now under sole Volkswagen ownership after years of fighting with BMW and BMW - celebrated its centennial in 2019. The key is made of vegetable tanned leather and takes about two days to craft each one. It is hand cut and shaped, then sewn, sealed, and polished to produce a high-quality finish. It is durable, compact, and fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is similar to the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key however it feels heavier and has a luxurious feel.

Secure-A-Key is also included to protect against keyless entry theft. This device is placed inside the remote control fob and disables it when the key has not been used for more than a few minutes. It stops thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices which will allow the key to be opened and start the vehicle.

Bentley's Mulliner division allows customers to design their car. The "mood station" lets customers pick images that inspire them. They can range from picturesque vistas to sporting events. Each time a selection is made, a pattern emerges and reveals the design and color preferences for the customized Bentley.

The guests receive the keys in a case designed by hand that houses the R.F.I.D. enabled key cards. The keys can also be fitted with Bentley Muliner Personalised Welcome Lamps, which illuminate the door-opening path with the owner's name or logo as they approach the vehicle.

Bentley says it takes roughly 500 man-hours in order to create and put together the typical Mulsanne. The inability to adopt modern technology is the key to this laborious task. The Crewe factory workers do not use a machine to space perfectly matched cross stitched leather seats. Instead, they do it by hand. Instead of letting the car's built in sensors guide it to perpendicular and parallel parking spaces the drivers must perform the task by hand.

Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization abilities with a unique Mulsanne W.O. Edition, that pays tribute to William Osler, the founder of Bentley.
