Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a classic sextet format, and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the group embarked on an extensive world tour in support of it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
