Transponder Keys

Instead of flat metal keys that are mechanically operated with cuts on the top and bottom, transponder (a portmanteau of transmitter and responder) keys have an electronic microchip inside their key heads. When they are fitted into a car that is equipped with transponder technology the chip transmits low-level signals to a receiver situated near the ignition switch. If the chip is programmed to send this signal it will trigger the engine to switch on. Transponder chips were designed to prevent car thieves, which is why they are found in the majority of modern automobiles.

Transponder technology was first utilized in World War II, when coded messages were transmitted on radio frequencies to determine whether incoming aircraft were friendly or hostile. The same idea was later used to create car keys as well, with General Motors creating the first transponder chip keys in 1985 for its Corvette model. Since then, all new cars are equipped with keys that have transponder chips, and they are also popular for older models that can be retrofitted with the transponder chip.

toyota-logo-2020.pngIf you own a car equipped with this kind of security system, make sure you always have an extra transponder key at hand, as it will only work only if the chip has been scanned correctly. But this isn't 100% secure and some people have discovered methods to fool the transponder system, such as kits and tutorials that explain how to get around it using electrical relays and wiring.

Proximity keys

Proximity keys are among the most recent keyless entry technology, and are now being used in a variety of vehicles. They let drivers unlock their car by merely touching the door handle using the key fob that is in their bag or pocket. The key fob connects to the vehicle, removing immobilisers and allows it to start.

Audi.jpgThere are a few drawbacks for proximity key systems though. If the key fob becomes damaged or lost, it cannot be used to start your vehicle. A locksmith or dealership will have to replace it, which can be expensive. The fobs are also powered by batteries, so they'll have to be replaced from time to time.

Another disadvantage of proximity key technology is that it disrupts the cause/effect cycle we're all familiar with when it comes to physical keys. In the case of a traditional lock, when you press the lock and it opens, you know that you have the key. You'll have to be within a specified distance to activate the proximity-sensing lock.

Despite these drawbacks the proximity keys are a great innovation for those who wish to prevent locking themselves out of their cars. In the event of an emergency, keep a backup key handy if you have a proximity-key. Contact your local Pop-A-Lock for a quote on the services and costs.

Keyless Entry Systems

These systems are synchronized to back-end software, allowing landlords to keep track of both exit and entry. These systems are synced with back-end software that allows the landlord to monitor entry and exit. Additionally these systems make it simpler for tenants to access the property in case of a crisis.

A keyless entry system transmits encrypted signals to an inside receiver. The receiver receives the signal and unlocks or starts your car. It also detects the presence of a driver and adjust the car's settings in accordance with their preferences. It will automatically shut the door, for instance the driver is carrying an item in his bag.

Certain keyless entry systems can be prone to attacks, even though they're generally very secure. A replay attack, for example, is when the remote control signal from the device is recorded and transmitted to a different location at a later time. However, this could be prevented by incorporating into the keyless entry system an algorithm which ensures that each transmission is different from the previous ones.

A keyless entry system has the advantage that it doesn't require you to change locks each when a tenant leaves. It's expensive to replace locks every time a tenant moves out and therefore it is sensible that landlords stay away from this expense as much as possible. Furthermore when using a keyless entry system the only thing that is required is to reset the code, which is much faster and simpler than replacing the entire lock.
