3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeled buggy is ideal for off-road terrain and offers the most comfortable ride for infants. They are also more convenient to move and push than a four-wheel buggy, especially those with fabric sling seats or seat units that are placed snugly in the frame, offering the most efficient geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheeled buggy offers excellent stability, which is why it's an ideal choice for off road walking (especially with an all terrain or off-road style seat unit). These buggys often have oversized front tires that can withstand bumps, kerbs and rough terrain. Some models have a lockable wheel on the front for additional stability while driving on uneven terrain.

It's worth bearing in mind that 3 wheel stroller cheap-wheel buggies can have a lower center of gravity than models with four wheels which means that they topple over more easily. However, the most reliable 3-wheel pushchairs have an ideal geometry and design to ensure they are stable in all conditions. They should be able to turn at a single click and be easy to steer with one hand and have a 360o swivelling front wheel which makes them ideal for manoeuvring and navigating difficult terrain.

Find models with pneumatic tyres. They are made to handle nonpaved tracks, and should be able to take on rocks, mud, gravel, etc. Many all-terrain buggies have an adjustable front wheel that can be locked to add stability when dealing with extremely rough terrain.

A tri-wheeled pram is a great option for runners and those who love to speed up the hill. This is especially true if you plan to connect to a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent example. It has a flat-reclining seat with five-point harnesses, and plenty of storage space for everything you need (plus the ability to extend 50+ of the sun hood). These will cope well over cobbles, grass and dirt tracks while providing the smoothest ride for anyone. These are also great for jogging, as they have a suspension built-in and are easy to climb up and down kerbs. However, they're quite heavy to push.

This 3-wheeler has 16 rear wheels, and a lockable swivel front wheel, so it's very manoeuvrable. It has tyres with air that need to be pumped up from time to time. It can be used by children up until the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler loved the seat shape and she was able to steer it easily with her 3-year-old in the seat.

The Baby Jogger Versa GT is an alternative that is also a great choice. It has an adjustable handlebar, a hood made of high-end materials that provides 50+ UV protection as well as an extremely high-quality hood. Fabric sling seats are tucked inside the frame of the buggie instead of on top of it like modular seats. This design has a lower centre-of-gravity, which is the perfect height. It is much easier to push and is lighter to kerb-pop (you don't know how many times you will do that as a new parent!).

Seating

The seating capacity of 3 wheelers is quite impressive and there are a variety of different options to choose from. The included carrycot plus is perfect for newborns (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfortable and cosy lie-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy). Older children and toddlers will enjoy the spacious and comfortable seat unit that has adjustable ventilation. It's important to note that these seats aren't fully reclined, but they can be lowered to the lowest level which should still give your child plenty of headroom and room to move around.

A fabric sling seat is also available, which offers the advantage of being placed snugly within the frame instead of on top like an open-back seat. This delivers a much lower centre of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier and lighter to push, especially when you're on bumpy terrain or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath was impressed with the way that this style of seat negotiated these obstacles.

She also noted that the grippy tyres on it made it easy to tackle kerbs and cobbles.

These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain and will require having their air pressure regularly topped up. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, which is why you should always have a repair kit and spare inner tube with you when you're out and out and about.

PU tyres are found on more pushchairs than air-filled tyres but they're still as robust. PU tires are easily distinguished by their matte finish and soft feel. They also slide over flat and tidy surfaces.

If you move your hand over the tyres you can tell if they're rubber or PU. If it feels as if it's moving, then it's a rubber or PU.
