The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of the previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than earlier performances.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album just a few months after, and went on a world tour support it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that affected his singing abilities.
