Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a good source of damage, more AD or even more affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to upgraded Common or Magic gear due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to weapons and armor items. They improve the effectiveness of the item they are attached to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of games and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged using a professional or higher salvage kit to recover upgrade components from items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can take on. The upgrade of an armor piece to maximum upgrade level will increase the damage it absorbs. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be heavier.

There are a variety of armor upgrades available in the game. Each has a different impact. Certain upgrades grant armor a greater amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade an item upgrading can receive, as shown below.

A few upgrades also feature magic or a hybrid of magic and technology, which is identified by an "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require a charge to use, and are indicated by the "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges associated with these upgrades refresh every day or never expire, dependent on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest option to improve your armor. You can locate it by exploring and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, however it is obtainable from the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied to armor pieces of the highest level. These upgrades can give a significant increases in stats and are worth the cost.

The player should be aware that upgrading a piece to the maximum upgrade level will increase its defense values. However, it will also reduce its agility and its speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The added defense typically isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of an weapon. Upgrades can improve the accuracy of a rifle, or the damage caused by shotgun shells. Some weapons have special upgrades to improve their inherent characteristics. Frictionless materials (improves stability, reduces the risk of weapon overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's acceleration for greater damage) are two examples.

Most weapon upgrades require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade. These can be gained by completing Side Quests or by killing a certain number of monsters and bosses.

The process of upgrading a weapon, equipment Set piece or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade cost that is based on a specific number of Bars. The more bars needed to complete an upgrade items the higher the level. If you have multiple upgrade materials, the cost of upgrading will be less.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade weapon and equipment sets has changed. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a certain amount of Bars. You could continue to do this until you reached a maximum upgrade level for your equipment or weapon, after which upgrades would reset.

You can still do this, however, the process is high on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're much better off going to the stores and buying equipment that has low upgrade levels but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These gears have a greater chance of giving you the highest tier blessings and perks.

To level up quicker, players usually prioritize upgrading their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons their teammates use to make them stronger. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R to make it more useful when paired with biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to increase the effectiveness of a skill or provide additional effects in armor and weapons. Jewelry crafting is the process of creating them. You combine gemstones with specific reagents in a jewelry table. The higher the quality of the gem, the greater the secondary effect. These reagents are obtained in the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and sometimes by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can improve the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the gem, it will provide a different stat boosts when it is inserted into weapons, gear and jewelry.

The Jeweler can create all tiers of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones, which require a certain level to get. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with another identical jewel without damaging the original one. However you can only swap out one jewel in an item of equipment once.

It is common to use more jewelry to enhance the appearance of. In addition to enhancing performance, the diamonds create an outer layer that is more durable than metal, which means that repeated friction with pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your weapons and shields. They offer a small benefit and are able to be swapped easily, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs, just like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis aren't swappable and are only recoverable by using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are items of equipment that provide a wide range of tiny but valuable advantages to your hero. They can be acquired starting in the starter areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, or by doing road interactions. They can also be crafted by jewelers, and found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinkets a player unlocks will be the cloak, which gives a small, but valuable boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. After that, they'll be able to purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player can acquire weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be placed in any type of equipment while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and is only compatible with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets can also grant buffs and skills that are active whenever the hero is not fighting. This allows a hero to be more efficient while inactive. It can also compensate for the absence of excellent slot in the talent tree or team that are normally filled by a hero's top stats.

A good guideline for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrade-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing in the near future, then any items with desirable stats, but less important than the iLevel of the item upgrading that is being upgraded. This is especially true when you are looking to upgrade multiple stats on an item. It's more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

At the beginning of the game, players who are in the jungle will typically want to upgrade their trinket to a red, while top and mid players will usually opt for either a pink or green ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.

In addition to the items listed above, players will also find other trinkets that form of trophies and rewards throughout the game. These can be earned through completing certain milestones in the story, for instance completing a chapter's main quest or killing a particular boss. These can be viewed by selecting the relevant achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
