3 Wheeler Buggies

ickle-bubba-venus-max-jogger-stroller-blA three-wheeler is perfect for tackling off-road terrain and provides the most comfortable ride for your infant. They are also easier to maneuver and push than a four-wheeler, especially those with fabric sling seats or seat units that are positioned comfortably in the frame, delivering the best geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled buggys are very stable, making them an ideal option for off-road walks (especially when equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). These buggys often have oversized front tires that can handle bumps, kerbs, and rough terrain. Some models have a lockable wheel on the front to provide extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.

It's important to keep in mind that 3-wheel buggies can have a lower center of gravity than 4-wheeled models, which can mean that they fall over more easily. That said, the best 3-wheel pushchairs are designed with an ideal geometry and design to ensure they are stable in all weather conditions. They should be able of turning at a single click and be able to steer using just one hand and have a 360o swivelling front wheel which makes them perfect for manoeuvring and navigating difficult terrain.

Look for models with pneumatic tyres. These are made to work on tracks that are not paved, and are able to withstand mud, gravel, rocks and more. Many all-terrain buggies come with a swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked for extra stability when you're dealing with rough terrain.

A 3 wheel buggies-wheeler is a good option for runners or for those who like to walk fast and uphill, particularly if you're planning to attach a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a world-facing seat that can recline flat and has improved 5-point harness and storage space for all your gear (plus an extendable 50+ sun hood). It's compact, lightweight and suitable for infants and can be used with the use of a car seat or carrycot. It can also be used for light jogging, but it's not designed for serious runners.

Weight

If you're looking for a buggy that can take on difficult terrain, you should select one with big tires. They can handle cobbles, grass and dirt tracks, while providing a smooth ride for all passengers. They're also good for jogging because they come with suspension and are easy to get up and down kerbs. The trade-off is that they're quite heavy to push.

The best 3 wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3 wheel jogger-wheeler has 16 rear wheels with an swivel wheel lockable to the front which makes it very maneuverable. It has tyres with air which require pumping up from time to time. It can carry children as young as the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the shape of the seat and found steering it easy even with her 3 year old riding along.

The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another great option. It comes with a movable handlebar, a hood made of high-end materials that offers 50+ UV protection, and a high quality hood. It's also easy to get up and down kerbs, and it can fit in small car boots. It can be used as a stroller along with baby carriers or toddlers.

Fabric slings are set in the frame and not on top as modular seats. This design provides a lower center of gravity and a perfect height, making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you cannot think about how often you'll do this when you're a new parent!)

Seating

The capacity for 3 wheelers is quite impressive, and there are a number of different options to choose from. For newborns it is possible to use the carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cosy and comfortable lie-flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy) and older infants and toddlers can use the world-facing or parent facing seat that is large and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. The seats don't recline completely, but can be lowered to the lowest point. This should still allow your child to have plenty of space and headroom.

A fabric sling is also available. It's a benefit that it is located within the frame, rather than on top as a seat that is modular. This results in a lower centre of gravity with perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially on bumpy terrain or over curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this kind of seat handled challenges.

This type of buggy has a large basket and other useful features, such as an hood that can be extended with 50+ UV protection, a simple to use brake pedal and a few innovative lights for visibility that can be placed in front of the occupants to increase safety on rough terrain.

Alternatively, if you are searching for a single baby buggy that can expand with your family There's the new sport(tm) which is a world's first that can take one baby from the moment of birth and change to take two or even three once your baby has developed, all within the footprint of one buggy.

Storage

The 3-wheeled model is more sturdy and can be moved with just one hand. It's also more suitable for difficult terrain. However, it does mean that the shopping basket doesn't hold as much as a 4-wheeler buggy.

A top-quality ATP will have excellent suspension, pneumatic tyres as well as a padded handle to ensure your comfort. It should also be equipped with the form of a car seat and carrycot and you can use it right from the moment you are born.

MFM's reviewers have found that the 3-wheeler frame doesn't pass through all doors in their homes, or small car boot - be sure you check the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded prior to purchasing in case you're concerned about space.

Choose a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3 wheel baby buggy!) seats. This is the most suitable option for your future and will save you money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is among the most popular. It can be used from day dot as a single buggy, and later converted into twin buggies after your baby starts to walk.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more comfortable. You'll find these on pushchairs like the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to be "an outstanding ride for my toddler". She also mentioned that the grippy tyres of the Phil & Ted's Sport made it easy for her to maneuver around the kerbs and other obstacles.

These tyres can be difficult to maintain and require having their air pressure regularly topped up. They are also more prone to punctures than foam tyres so it is essential that you have a repair kit along with a spare inner tube and pump on hand when you are you're out and about in your buggy.

PU tyres are more commonly used on pushchairs because they are less expensive than tyres filled with air, but they are equally robust. You can identify PU tire treads by their matte appearance and soft, smooth feel. They also slide across smooth and tidy surfaces.

You can usually discern the difference between air-filled and PU tyres by running your hand over each one. If it feels hard, then it's a rubber tyre, and If it slides, then it's a PU. You can also confirm that your buggy is fitted with PU tyres simply by sliding the tyres on flat, clean surfaces They'll be able to roll easily and should fit comfortably in their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are typically used in high-performance buggies as well as Joggers due to their ability to deal with the rough terrain associated with this type of pushchair. This can make your buggy less stable since the foam loses its springy feel. You'll also find that these types of tyres can typically be noisy because they generate lots of noise when you turn and make your way around town.
