Keyless Entry

Most newer cars and even some older models provide keyless entry, a feature that allows you to unlock your car without having touch the door handle or insert the key. While these systems are extremely convenient, they do have their drawbacks. Some of the biggest problems are related to security. If your key fob is lost in the car when you are inside, it will no longer be able to transmit the signal, and you won't be able to unlock or start the vehicle. Numerous manufacturers have systems that inform you that the key is running out, but they are not foolproof.

Transponder Keys

Transponder keys (also known as chip keys) are among the most sought-after types of car keys. They function with a small microchip embedded in the head of the plastic. The microchip transmits a low level signal to the receiver in your car, which matches the serial number that is programmed by the manufacturer. This is done to avoid unauthorized copying of your key which means you will be able to only start your vehicle.

They are much harder to copy and are less likely to be stolen. They also cost more than flat metal keys, but if you've got an expert locksmith that knows how to program them for your specific vehicle, they could save you money over the long term.

They are not just secure, but they can easily be damaged by children. They must be kept in a safe place that is out of reach of young children. They could also pose a hazard if they are dropped or tossed into water and some require batteries, which could make them unsafe to leave in the house.

Mechanical Keys

Modern cars do not require mechanical keys. Instead, they employ an RFID chip inside keys to identify it and communicate with the car's system to start and function.
