What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

Like its name suggests, transponders transmit an encoded signal that contains the four-digit code when it is questioned by air traffic control. This signal is known as an SQUAWK code and it is the basis for aircraft identification on radar screens. It can also be used to send a specific message to air traffic control in the situation of an emergency, or to alert air traffic controllers to changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable to speak to the radio. They are vital to ensure safe flying.

Each aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar probes by displaying an identifier code. This allows ATC to identify an aircraft on a busy screen. Transponders can be programmed car keys to respond in a variety of ways when asked. Mode A only transmits the code, whereas mode C also provides altitude information.
