Keyless Entry

Some older models and some newer models have keyless entry. This feature lets you unlock your vehicle without having to insert a lock or turn the door handle. Some of the most advanced systems feature remote keyless ignition (RKI) which allows you to start your engine and can activate ten electronic accessories.

These systems make use of radio waves that are released by your vehicle and received by the receiver within the key fob. The key fob transmits a signal when you press the handle's button or place your hand on it. The signal is received by the receiver of the vehicle.

Some of the most advanced keyless entry systems for cars are integrated with smart technology, which allows you to manage them through a mobile app or a cloud for management. This makes them easier to manage when you have guests or maintenance personnel who require access to vehicles or buildings on your property.

While these systems are practical, they do have their drawbacks. Some of the most significant drawbacks are related to security. For instance, if the key fob battery goes out while you're in the car and it stops working, it won't transmit its signal and you won't be capable of locking or starting the engine. While there are many manufacturers that have systems that alert you when the key is nearing death but they're not foolproof.

Transponder Keys

One of the most well-known kinds of car keys is a transponder key (also called chip keys) that work with an embedded microchip inside the head of the plastic car key. The microchip transmits a weak signal to the receiver inside your car that only matches the serial number encoded into it by the manufacturer. This is to prevent unauthorized duplication of your key so that only you can start your vehicle.

They are much harder to copy and are less prone to being stolen. These keys are more expensive than flat metal ones, but they can save you a significant amount of money if you can find a locksmith who is able to program them to your vehicle.

While they do offer a lot of security but they are very easy for children to play with and may cause damage. They must be kept in a safe space that is out of reach of young children. They could also pose dangerous if dropped or tossed into water and some require batteries, making them dangerous to leave in the house.

Most times an experienced locksmith will be able duplicate these keys and have them reprogrammed for you. This can be done for less than what you'd pay a dealer and is also more practical.

Folding keys are another kind of key that is used for some cars. The metal is folded into the plastic body making it easier to store and smaller. These keys are becoming more popular, mainly because they are less prone than other types of keys to be damaged by heat or water. They are also more difficult to duplicate than other types of keys, making them a safer choice.

They're not the simplest but they'll work in the event that you've lost your regular car keys. They're also less expensive to replace than a transponder key and are a great choice for people who want to save money on their vehicle's security features.

Mechanical Keys

Modern cars no longer use mechanical keys. Rather, they utilize an RFID chip inside the key to identify the key and communicate with the car's systems to start and operate.
