Honeycomb is a delicious miracle of nature, created by honeybees. It's a hexagonal shape comprised of beeswax, which is perfectly organized. It's also one of the most useful parts of the beehive. Honeycomb structures today have many scientific and engineering applications.

The hive uses honeycomb for three reasons: it's an area for the new bees to nest, a place to store pollen until it turns into "bee bread," and a long-term location for the hive's reserve of nectar. When a beehive swarms it, the bees begin the hive from scratch with a new honeycomb foundation.

Bees create honeycombs by vibrating their flight muscles to produce heat which softens the beeswax plates they secrete from their abdomens. The bees then shape the wax into cylinders and connect adjacent cells on both sides. This arrangement is highly uniform, which suggests that it's not the result of blind physical force but a well-organized pattern of behavior in construction. It's also an exceptional instance of convergent evolution, an example of convergent evolution where the same feature is discovered independently in closely related species.
