Honeycomb is a delightful wonder of nature created by honeybees. It's a hexagonal structure composed of beeswax and perfectly organized. It's also one of the most useful elements of the beehive. Honeycomb structures are employed in a wide range of scientific and engineering fields.

The hive uses honeycomb for three reasons: an area for the new bees to nest, a place to store pollen until it is transformed into "bee bread," and a long-term storage space for the hive's reserves of nectar. When a beehive swarms, the bees startup a new hive with a fresh honeycomb foundation.

Bees create honeycombs by vibrating their flight muscles to generate heat. This softens the beeswax plate they secrete from their abdominals. They then mold the softened wax into cylinder shapes and connect them to cells adjacent on each side. This arrangement is extremely uniform, suggesting that it is not merely the result of random physical forces, but rather a highly well-organized pattern of construction behavior. This is also an example of convergent evolution that occurs when a similar feature appears independently in closely related species.
