3 Wheeled Buggies

A 3 wheeler pushchair-wheeler is ideal for off-roading and dealing with terrain, from bumpy pavements to woodland tracks. They are also easier to maneuver around kerbs than 4-wheel models.

Stability

With four wheels and a center of gravity that's balanced by weight of your child in the seat, 4-wheel buggies are generally thought to be more stable than triwheelers. But that doesn't mean the three-wheel buggie isn't worth considering, since some of these models are made to handle anything from rough terrain to bustling high-streets.

If you want a buggie that is easy to handle and will not fall over on bumpy pavements, look for one with big rear wheels and a lockable front wheel. These all-terrain buggies also come with pneumatic tires that are perfect for handling non-paved surfaces. They are able to be used even on sandy beaches or tracks through woodlands.

They are also excellent buggies to run with because they provide great stability on more rough terrain, and can aid you in staying with your running partner. They're also excellent at climbing and descending steep kerbs and a majority come with a suspension built in which means your child will be able to ride comfortably.

The one thing that can make a 3-wheeled pushchair tricky to maneuver is the large frame, which makes it more difficult to maneuver through tight spaces and narrow doorways than a 4-wheeler. Some manufacturers have solved this problem with a clever design which flips the wheels upwards when they are not being used. This reduces their size and makes it easier to maneuver through doorways.

You'll also have to think about whether your buggy is suitable for your baby from birth or if you're thinking of using it with an infant car seat or carry cot. Make sure that the buggy has a lie-flat feature and if it is compatible with second seat and buggy boards if you plan to bring your toddler along. A majority of 3-wheelers can fold flat and be stacked upright. This is a good option for those with an unwieldy boot space or a small amount of storage space at home. However, some will require you to remove the front wheel when folding if you wish to fit into even smaller spaces.

Manoeuvrability

Three-wheeled buggies usually provide better maneuverability than four-wheeled pushchairs. Many of them have a swivelling wheels on the front, which allows you to steer and change direction using one hand. Some also come with a lockable front wheels which gives you stability on rougher terrain. Some models can be used with an additional seat or buggy board if you're looking to increase the size of your family.

If you're thinking of taking your three-wheeled vehicle off of tracks that are paved, it's worth opting for a vehicle with air-filled tyres (also called pneumatic tyres) which can cope with the most challenging terrain. These tyres might need to be filled from time to time, but they will be more durable and puncture-proof than solid tyres. Find a model with a an adjustable swivelling front wheel that locks to aid you in navigating difficult surfaces.

When folded, three-wheelers may be heavier than buggies with four wheels due to the single wheel in front. Make sure the model you pick can fit in the boot of your car and can be placed upright if needed. Some models fold by one hand, and stand up when collapsed. This can save space in a small car boot.

A quality 3 wheel pushchair can cope with most terrain from busy main streets to tracks through woodlands. It's important to think about how you will use it every day. If you'll be running the school run, it should be able to cope with steep kerbs and slopes. If you plan to jog with it, make sure it has a swivelling "stretch front wheel' that can be locked. This will help keep the ride stable.

MFM reviewer Kath found her tri-wheeled buggy able to cope really well with urban and countryside walks. Kath noted that it was able to negotiate cobbles, rough paths and bumpy pavements easily and felt pleasant when running. It can be modified to meet the needs of a baby from birth, with a carry cot or lay-flat seat. It is also compatible with the most well-known second-seats and stroller boards.

Fabric Sling Seat

The primary difference between a fabric and a modular one is the fabric sling. It sits inside the buggy frame, as opposed to being placed on top like the modular chair. This allows for a more ergonomically appropriate position for babies that instantly gives lower center of gravity that is at the proper height. This leads to a more comfortable push, a less hefty curb-pop (you do not have to exert as much effort and weight to lift the buggy off the curb) and improved balance and stability.
