How to Replace an audi a3 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28).
