Indices Close Mixed as Inflation Relief Meets a Yield Surge

Wall Street ended Wednesday's session mixed, closing out September with a Federal Reserve-favored inflation report that came in cooler than expected but ultimately couldn't hold back a fresh surge in Treasury yields. The S&P 500 slipped 0.25% to 7,651.54, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.86% to 50,906.05, while the Nasdaq Composite bucked the trend to close 0.24% higher at 26,861.06.

The August personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose 3.4% year-over-year, below the 3.7% forecast, while core PCE came in at 3.0% versus an expected 3.3%. The cooler-than-feared reading initially lifted stocks and eased worries the Fed might need to raise rates again. But those gains faded as stronger-than-expected economic data -- including an upward revision to spring GDP growth and a rebound in private payrolls (ADP reported 90,000 jobs added in September, well above the 68,000 consensus) -- pushed Treasury yields to fresh highs. The 10-year yield climbed to roughly 5.29%, its highest level since 2007, while the 30-year touched about 5.63%.

Notable Movers

Hewlett Packard Enterprise jumped nearly 6% after raising its networking revenue guidance on strong AI-related demand, and MongoDB gained close to 5% after its board authorized an additional $1 billion in stock buybacks. On the downside, Moderna and Northrop Grumman each fell more than 4%, and Cal-Maine Foods slid after reporting a wider-than-expected quarterly loss tied to sharply lower egg prices. Traders were also positioning ahead of Micron Technology's earnings report due after the close, a closely watched read on the memory-chip and AI-hardware sector.

For the month, the S&P 500 finished September roughly flat, up about 0.1%, as the rate-cut optimism and AI-driven rally that carried stocks through the summer gave way to growing caution over elevated bond yields heading into the fourth quarter.
