Americans vote in a high-stakes midterm. Polls opened Tuesday for the final day of the 2026 midterm elections, with all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and 36 governorships on the ballot. Republicans hold a narrow three-seat House majority and a 53-47 Senate edge, and Democrats are pushing to flip control of Congress. Closely watched Senate races include Georgia (Ossoff vs. Collins), North Carolina (Roy Cooper in the race for Thom Tillis's open seat), Maine (Collins vs. Troy Jackson), Ohio (Brown vs. Husted), Texas (Talarico vs. Paxton), Michigan (Rogers vs. El-Sayed) and Alaska (Peltola vs. Sullivan). The AP reported that voting has so far unfolded with relatively few problems, though heavy rain and flash flooding threatened turnout in parts of Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. OpenSecrets projects roughly $12 billion in cycle spending, the most expensive midterm on record.
Supreme Court turns back push to set aside California ballots. On Monday night the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's bid to force California to set aside thousands of ballots as part of its search for noncitizen voters. The Justice and Homeland Security departments have mounted a broad noncitizen-voting hunt, including a predawn operation that led to more than two dozen arrests in California, and the DOJ planned its largest-ever polling-place monitoring effort. Asked whether he would accept the results, President Trump said, "I will if they are honest."
Billionaire tax, voter ID and abortion on state ballots. Beyond the candidate races, voters are deciding dozens of measures. California's Proposition 40 would impose a one-time 5% tax on billionaires living in the state, which supporters say would raise tens of billions of dollars. Voter ID proposals are on the ballot in California, Arizona, Colorado and Nevada; Alaska would repeal ranked-choice voting; Missouri would repeal its abortion-rights amendment; and more than 40 local data-center measures are up for a vote.

A US official told Fox News that American forces struck Iran's Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday after Iran fired at a US aircraft. The official called the strike "defensive" and said it was not the start of further military action. On Election Day morning, Trump said the US has "total control" of the strait, while Qatari mediators continued working to narrow gaps between Washington and Tehran.
Trump says $4 billion in annual aid to Israel will end. In a "Fox & Friends" interview Tuesday, Trump said roughly $4 billion a year in US aid to Israel "gets cut off at the end of the year," adding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised the idea and that Israel can still buy American weapons. The current US-Israel agreement provides about $3.8 billion a year through 2028.
